The steps between getting your authority and hauling your first load.
Getting authority is only the first step. Many new carriers get stuck waiting on insurance or paperwork. This page walks through the usual steps in order. It is general information, not legal or insurance advice. Rules change, so confirm each step with FMCSA and your insurance agent.
As of late August 2026, about 18,000 new authority applications were pending, and about 92% had no proof of insurance on file yet. Insurance is the step that holds most people up.

What a dispatcher does and does not do
Does: looks for loads that fit your truck and your lanes, negotiates rates for you, handles load paperwork and communication with brokers, and keeps you informed.
Does not: replace your insurance, your authority or your safety responsibilities, and does not move freight for shippers.
Ridgepoint is a dispatcher, not a broker. We work for the carrier and are paid only by the carrier.
